COACHES

Rose Lewis

My volleyball career started nearly 18 years ago. I grew up playing volleyball in my hometown of Santa Barbara, CA, and I played for Santa Barbara Volleyball Club for 7 years. My high school team, Santa Barbara High School, was very competitive - winning our CIF division my junior year and finishing as CIF semi-finalists my senior year. I went on to play Division 1 volleyball at Bucknell University. I was one of the setters and was chosen to be team captain my senior year. I credit volleyball for the majority of my professional success as it taught me critical soft skills like time management, leadership, teamwork, and so much more.

After graduation, I moved to Houston to become a 5th-grade teacher with Teach for America. During my time in Houston, I coached at Texas Tornados (13s and 15s), and then the next season I coached at Houston Juniors (15s). I moved to Austin in 2017 to go to grad school at UT, and I was lucky enough to join the staff at AJV! During my time here, I've been the head coach of 12 Navy, 13 Molten, and now, 13 Navy. I was awarded "New Coach of the Year" during my first season (2017-2018).

My coaching philosophy looks beyond developing young players, but also developing young individuals. I was pigeon-holed as a setter at a young age, so I truly believe in training well-rounded, versatile players. I like to focus on the fundamentals, and I believe a successful season can look so many different ways - it's not only about the winning record. I believe differentiation and individualization are imperative to each child's growth, and I do my best to embed that approach into every aspect of my coaching from the practice plans to my communication style to individual feedback and more.

I received my Master of Science in Social Work in 2019, and now, I work at the Design Institute for Health at Dell Medical School. We use human-centered design to tackle some of the complex, systemic problems in healthcare. I'm also a barre instructor at Motiv, a female-owned gym here in Austin, and in my remaining free time, I like to play with my pup, Tater, spend time outside, and enjoy all the live music that Austin has to offer
